Why I train the way I do

“Keep on doing everything that we can do for as long as we can do it, as comfortably as we can do it.”

How she started running after her youngest was born, the races that followed — Ironman, the Boston Marathon, ultras, and a double crossing of the Grand Canyon in a single day — and why she trains people the way she does.

In her words

I came to this from endurance sport.

Outside the gym I’m a runner, a cyclist, and a hiker who would happily disappear onto a trail with a pack for a few days. I’ve also spent time coaching marathon runners, and that turns out to be useful for almost everyone I work with now: it teaches you how to build a person up over months instead of weeks, and how to tell the difference between hard and too hard.

Most of my clients aren’t training for a marathon. They want to keep playing pickleball, get up off the floor without help, or stay steady on their feet on a bad day. The goals are different, but the method isn’t — pay attention to what the body in front of you is telling you, adjust, and give the work enough time to actually matter.

I would love to help you meet your fitness goals — in person or remote.

Outside the gym

I still put in the miles.

Running, riding, and long days on trail. It is where I learned what a training block actually feels like from the inside, and why I would rather adjust a session than push you through one.

What people say afterwards.

I have had 36 sessions with Melissa Hersh. She is an outstanding personal trainer. She tailors her workout sessions for the individual but is completely flexible to accommodate any physical issues the client might have on a given day. Her workouts vary each session in order to provide something new to keep the client interested and motivated.
